In October, the extension of martial law and the adoption of the state budget in its first reading were significant in shaping the future of the media environment in the short-term perspective. A controversial draft law #10242, which has the potential to undermine the freedoms of investigative journalists and whistleblowers by penalizing the disclosure of information from public registries, has resurfaced on Parliament’s agenda. Simultaneously, the competition for the vacant member positions within the media regulator under the parliamentary quota continued.
The most notable events happening in this period were:
- the extension of martial law until the end of January 2027;
- the publication of the candidates for the vacant positions within the media regulator under the Verkhovna Rada quota;
- the publication of the NBC criteria for classifying entities as subjects in the sphere of online media.
