What’s up With Ukraine’s Media Regulation: 2024 Key Highlights

In 2024, we closely monitored and reported on key developments in Ukraine’s media sector and regulation with a series of monthly digests. Find below some of the year’s key highlights:

Law on Media amendments. Draft Law #12111 was adopted in the first reading to refine the Law on Media. It aligns NBC dismissal procedures with international standards, strengthens content restrictions against aggressor-state media, and provides recommendations on the use of AI for co-regulatory bodies.

AI regulation in media. Recommendations for the responsible use of AI in media were developed, focusing on transparency, labelling AI-generated content, and ethical data handling.

European integration. Ukraine officially began EU accession negotiations, including plans to align media and online platforms’ regulation with EU standards. The Cabinet of Ministers has formed negotiation groups to oversee Ukraine’s EU accession and align legislation with EU media standards.

GDPR-compliant data protection.  The Parliament advanced Draft Law #8153 on the protection of personal data, which provides enhanced safeguards for data subjects in line with GDPR standards. It is now being prepared for a second reading.
